According to sacred accounts, Ravana, a great devotee of Shiva, offered his ten heads in penance. Pleased, Shiva healed Ravana and granted him a Jyotirlinga. Ravana was tricked by the gods into placing the lingam in Deoghar, where it became rooted and became Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga.
