Legend

The legend tells of a devotee named Supriya who was imprisoned by the demon Daruka. Supriya worshipped Shiva while in captivity, and Shiva appeared to rescue him, destroying the demon. The place where Shiva manifested to protect his devotee came to be known as Nageshwar, and the lingam established there became one of the Jyotirlingas.
