About the Temple

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the most revered Shiva shrines and is located in the ancient city of Ujjain. This Jyotirlinga is unique as it is the only one facing south (Dakshinamukhi), considered highly auspicious and powerful in tantric traditions. The temple has a deep connection with time (Kala), and the deity is regarded as the Lord of Time—Mahakala.

Legend

A demon named Dushana once terrorized Ujjain. To protect his devotees, Lord Shiva appeared from the ground as a fierce flame and destroyed the demon. The spot where Shiva appeared became the site of the Mahakaleshwar temple. It is said that Lord Shiva took this form to permanently reside in Ujjain as Mahakala.
