King Mandhata of the Ikshvaku clan worshipped Lord Shiva here until the Lord manifested himself as a Jyotirlinga. Another legend speaks of a war between Devas and Danavas, where Devas prayed to Shiva who appeared as Omkareshwar and defeated the Danavas.
