Bhagirathi Ganga Avataran
Descent of the Ganges
Ganga Avatarana marks the descent of the celestial river Ganga from the heavens to Earth. This divine intervention was orchestrated by King Bhagiratha's severe penance to purify the ashes of his ancestors. The immense force of Ganga's descent was so powerful it could have shattered the Earth, so Lord Shiva compassionately agreed to channel her flow by capturing her in his matted locks, allowing her to flow gently across the Earth.
Shiva as Gangadhara is the supreme controller of cosmic forces. By containing the mighty Ganga in his matted locks, he demonstrates his immense power, compassion, and his role as a divine facilitator who bridges the celestial and terrestrial realms.
Background
King Sagara's 60,000 sons were burnt to ashes by Sage Kapila's gaze. Their souls could only be liberated by the purifying waters of the celestial river Ganga.
Bhagiratha’s Penance
Bhagiratha, a descendant of Sagara, undertook a rigorous penance to please Brahma and Ganga. Ganga agreed to descend but warned her force would destroy the Earth.
Shiva's Intervention
Bhagiratha then prayed to Shiva, who compassionately agreed to receive Ganga. As she descended, Shiva captured her in his matted locks, breaking her fall and releasing her gently.
Liberation
Ganga followed Bhagiratha to the spot where his ancestors' ashes lay. Upon flowing over them, their souls were purified and attained moksha.
