Sharabha is a fierce, part-lion, part-bird, part-human avatar of Shiva, created to subdue and pacify Vishnu’s Narasimha avatar, whose wrath had grown uncontrollable after the destruction of Hiranyakashipu. In this form, Shiva demonstrated the supremacy of divine compassion over even the fiercest rage. Sharabha symbolizes Shiva’s ability to balance the cosmic order by intervening even in other divine manifestations when needed.

Purpose

To subdue the raging Narasimha and restore cosmic equilibrium by demonstrating that wrath, even divine, must be tempered by wisdom and control.

Iconography

Appearance: A colossal creature with the body of a lion and wings of a bird, eight or more limbs, and ferocious features. In some depictions, Sharabha has a bird’s beak, sharp claws, and multiple heads. In anthropomorphic forms, Shiva may be shown with lion-like features merged with bird-wings and surrounded by a flaming aura.
